Great! Yeah, there are only 7 weeks left until the election and there is a lot left to do to pass the Regional Transit Measure which is why I’m calling.

As you know, passing the regional transit measure is critical to stop huge cuts to

• (If calling East Bay) BART, bus, and paratransit service that our communities depend on.
• (If calling San Mateo and Santa Clara County) Caltrain, bus, and paratransit service that our communities depend on.

We can win this ( their name_), but we’ve got to reach out to a lot of voters, and we really need your help! Every day for the next 7 weeks we have phone banking and canvassing opportunities where you can join in and help get the word out to voters.

The phone banking shifts are in the early evening Monday through Thursday for about an hour, while canvassing and tabling are in the morning and middle of the day on weekends.

I’m hoping we can sign you up for at least 3 shifts across the next 7 weeks. What days work for you to join a phone bank to help save the Bay’s transit?

If they need re-introduction/reminder: Oh no worries, and yeah, a lot is going on these days. The short version is transit in the Bay Area is severely underfunded, the federal government isn’t helping, and the state government just cut transit funding by a few hundred million dollars. And while more people are riding transit than before the pandemic, the trips per person is down.

So someone who took transit 5 or 6 days a week might only be doing it 2 or 3 times a week. Transit is still essential and there is a million transit trips a day in the Bay, but that means our transit agencies face huge drops in revenue so:

BART will be forced to cut service by 70%, close 15 stations, and raise fares
CALTRAIN will be forced to stop weekend service and run trains only once an hour

And the same goes for bus and paratransit too throughout the Bay. So we are trying to pass the Regional Transit Measure which would stop cuts, help improve service, and help fund every transit agency in the 5 bay area counties through raising a billion dollars a year from a half percent sales tax.

It’s on the ballot this November and we need a majority vote across the region to pass it, which means we’ve got to talk with a lot of folks. So I’m hoping you can help us get the word out either a phone bank or a canvassing shift sometime in the next 7 weeks. What days work for you to help talk with voters?

• It’s a half a percent sales tax, which applies to buying stuff, like a pair of shoes, which if they were $70, would now cost an extra 35 cents in order to keep transit throughout the Bay running, but services like hair cuts, or rent or insurance or electric bills aren’t changed. All in all a pretty good deal to stop big cuts to transit.
• (Especially if you’re talking with a San Francisco voter, note that it’s a 1 percent sales tax in San Francisco, but half a percent in Alameda, Contra Costa, San Mateo, and Santa Clara counties)

• To have a measure that is multiple counties AND multiple agencies, we needed to get an authorizing law passed in Sacramento
• Otherwise, it'd be a BART measure but bus service wouldn't get funded. or it'd be a _name a county__measure but who funds BART to run service in the other counties? Our systems are regional and interconnected so we have to fund it as a regional/interconnected basis
• Getting a law passed in Sacramento meant that Gov Gavin Newsom had to sign it so it had to be a sales tax – but for most people we’re talking about $8 or $10 a month to save all the transit in the Bay Area – compared to how much it’d cost us in gas, traffic, and parking to NOT have transit, this is well worth it – so we’d love your support!

At some point you signed up for the Seamless Bay Area or Transbay Coalition email list – probably from registering for an event of theirs like a webinar or signing a petition and giving them your phone number for calls like this.

It is used to run transit service in the 5 counties. It’s based on a law that passed last year which specified what the money goes for, and includes an oversight committee and efficiency study
